50 years ago – 1962

• In Albert Lea City Softball League the Cabin team defeated Smith-Douglas 4-3. Murph Berg was the winning pitcher and Al Brooks hit a three-run home run for the Cabin.

• Winona swept Glenville 11-0 in the first game and 6-0 in the final game to win the District 1 title and advance to the Minnesota State Junior American Legion Tournament.

• Grace Lutheran defeated Trinity 8-4 and won its fifth consecutive Church League title and finished the Church League season undefeated at 9-0. Dave Long hit two home runs and Archie Nelson had one for Grace.

25 years ago – 1987

• Named to the Baseball Hall of Fame were Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs, Jim “Catfish” Hunter and Ray Dandridge of the Negro League.

• The Alden American Legion baseball team defeated New Richland 4-0 in a sub-district game. Mark Stoneback hit a bases loaded double for three RBIs.

• The first place Minnesota Twins defeated the Seattle Mariners 4-3. Steve Lombardozzi hit a three run home run for the Twins.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The Albert Lea Elks U-16 girls’ soccer team were 10-0 in league play and had an automatic bid to the Minnesota State Tournament. Team members were Amy Marka, Laura Hillman, Katie Stenseth, Katie Dooley, Crystal Rentz, Brianne Plantage, Char Everhart, Emily Staloch, Tara Wrolson, Emily Bergstrom, Lacey Pederson, Tessa Christenson, Stacey Armstrong, Nicole Sorenson, Mandy Ardolf, Missy Reichl, Jenny Hulst, Brooke Wuerflein, Breanna Millhouse, Kelly Schreiber, Sally Kurth and Katie Kjos.

• The Albert Lea 14 and under fast pitch team defeated Wells 22-9. Evin Sather hit two triples and scored four runs and Niki Hendrickson and Marissa Cottrell had two hits each for Albert Lea.

• Placing first in the district girls’ soccer shoot out and advancing to state competition from Albert Lea were Amy Horejsi in the 8-9 age division and Sophie Jayne in the 10-11 age division.
