After the Albert Lea girls’ cross country team placed first in a six-team race in Austin on Tuesday and the boys’ team finished second, Tigers coach Jim Haney called it a successful start to the season.

With no surprise, Chrissy Monson led the girls’ race, winning by 12 seconds.

Haney said the runners behind Monson were packed well and competed to the best of their abilities.

“I am so proud of all my runners, but the depth of the team really did shine as Albert Lea was the first to have its Top 7 runners in before other teams,” Haney said. “It helped clinch the victory for the Tigers.

In the boys’ race, Haney said just one of Albert Lea’s boys made it in the Top 10.

“We still were able to take second place because the boys packed up and dominated 10-20,” Haney said. “The boys have worked so hard it is great to see the effort they put in pay off.”
