50 years ago – 1962

• In first round of playoff games in the amateur baseball State Line League, Glenville defeated Hayward 7-5. Gerry Steene led Glenville with two doubles. Emmons upset Alden in the other first round game.

• New Richland defeated Janesville 12-2 in a first round game in the amateur baseball Four County league playoffs. Jim Clark was the winning pitcher, and Dennis Roesler was a perfect four hits in four at bats for New Richland. New Richland won the Four County League regular season with a record of 12-2.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• In sub-district American Legion baseball Glenville defeated New Richland 8-7 with Randy Severtson the winning pitcher. Alden defeated Glenville 11-3 to win the sub-district title. Kevin Newman pitched the win and Jeremy Johnson had three hits for Alden.

• On Aug. 3 the Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Niekro was caught with emory cloth and scuffing the baseball. He was given a 10-day suspension by American League president Dr. Bobby Brown.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The Albert Lea U-16 girls defeated Centennial 9-1 to win their last pool game. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Katie Stenseth, three, Amy Marka, two, Laura Hillman, Katie Dooley, Crystal Rentz and Tara Wrolson. The U-16 girls soccer team defeated Maple Grove 5-0 to win the Classic 3 state title. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Hillman, Char Everhart, Dooley, Amy Marka and Stenseth. The U-16 girls finished their season with a 19-2 record.

• Albert Lea wrestlers placing in the 32nd Annual Asics/Vaughn Junior/18th Annual Cadet National Wrestling championship in Fargo, N.D., included: Chris Hable, 16, third in Cadet (15 and 16 years olds) Greco-Roman Heavyweight Division: Josh Hansen, 17, eighth in freestyle (17 and 18 years old); Nate Goodnature, 15, in cadet level freestyle; Zach Hansen, 15, in cadet level freestyle and Greco-Roman.

• The U-15 Albert Lea girls soccer team lost to West Side 2-1 and their record stood at 8-2-3. Stacie Armstrong scored for Albert Lea.
