50 years ago – 1962
• In church league softball Grace Lutheran was defeated by Conger 4-3. Ken Heine was the winning pitcher and hit two home runs for Conger.
• The Wells amateur baseball team defeated Morristown 3-0 and advanced to the finals of Region “B.” Marv Stenzel was the winning pitcher.
• Albert Lea lost to Bloomington 5-4 and was eliminated from the Southern Minnesota League baseball playoffs. Myron Hoffman and Dick Anderson each had three hits for Albert Lea.
• Hartland defeated Hoff’s Bar of Owatonna 5-0 in a first-round game in the third annual Albert Lea Invitational softball tournament. Ken Sibilrud threw a no-hitter and had 13 strikeouts for Hartland.
25 years ago – 1987
• In their season opening match the Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team defeated Fairmont 5-2. Winning in singles matches for Albert Lea were Kelly Lauman at No. 2, Melissa Nistler at No. 3 and Lisa Worke at No. 4. Doubles winners for Albert Lea were Jill Gaetze and Joni Breitholtz at No. 2 and Sheri Adams and Tina Jorgenson at No. 3. Team members included Lesley Hallberg, Lauman, Jill Oakland, Worke, Val Lindeman, Nistler, Jenny Volkenant, Breitholtz, Adams, Gaetze, Jorgenson, Angie O’Byrne and Mindy Rice. The head coach of the girls’ tennis team was Tom Dyrdal.
10 years ago – 2002
• In their Southeast Conference opener Glenville defeated Houston 3-0 by scores of 15-2, 15-4 and 15-7. Alisa Rayman had 11 kills for the Wolverines.
• Jacque Jones hit two home runs for the Minnesota Twins in their 7-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Also hitting home runs for the Twins were Christian Guzman, Doug Mientkiewicz and David Ortiz. Brad Radke was the winning pitcher.
• The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Tennessee Titans 14-1. Scoring touchdowns for the Vikings were Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper. James Wofford led the Vikes with 52 rushing yards.
