Workers let the building go

It has been the long-term goal for the school board at United South Central School in Wells to see how bad of shape they could get the school in by not doing major repairs so that they could get a new school. I worked in the kitchen at the school for 15 years. One day when I got to work the early shift and was taking a break before getting things ready for the noon lunch, the maintenance personnel came in the lunchroom for their break. I overheard a conversation they were having about the condition of the school. The head maintenance person was telling the rest of the maintenance personnel how he was told not to do a lot of the major repairs so that the school would get rundown and the district could ask for a new school. I didn’t hear anything mentioned that morning that the school lacked the funds to do the major repairs, just that they were hoping for a new school.
I have heard the above statement from other people in the USC School District as to why the major repairs weren’t done and that was so the district could ask for a new school.
I have heard and read remarks over the years about how bad the high school gym floor looks. That’s because the elementary students use it for a roller-skating rink when they have physical education during the winter months.
Buildings don’t educate kids. Teachers do.
