Freeborn County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to terminate the Freeborn County jail administrator at the center of an internal investigation.

Marcellino Peña had been on unpaid administrative leave since Sept. 5 and paid administrative leave since July 23. He now is off the payroll.

He had worked for the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office since 2004.

Freeborn County Administrator John Kluever said the investigation related to allegations of misconduct by a law enforcement officer, but he could not comment further.

Freeborn County Sheriff Bob Kindler declined to discuss why Peña was investigated.

The commissioners have discussed the issue in closed sessions.

Steve Westland is the other jail administrator. He remains on staff. Prior, he was in charge of operations, while Peña over security.
