50 years ago – 1962

• In a playoff game for third place in American Division of the Church Softball League Hayward defeated Clarks Grove 9-5. Winning pitcher Jerry Schewe had four hits.

• Quarterback John Hegland scored a 1-yard touchdown for ALHS in its season opening 6-0 win over the Owatonna Indians.

• The Glenville High School football team defeated the Emmons Eagles 20-0. Scoring touchdowns for the Trojans were Tom Struck, Dick Offenhauser and Doug Cipra.

• The Alden High School football team defeated Ellendale 20-0. Dennis Freidel, Bob Hoeg and Lowell McColley scored touchdowns for the Blackhawks.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• Marilyn Claasen, sixth year head coach of the Albert Lea High School volleyball team greeted three returning letter winners. They were Julie Coughlin, Carol Hoffman and Stacie Danielsen.

• Returning letter winners for the ALHS boys cross country team were Jeff Burns, Mark Pettey, Blake Davis, Don Schneider, Tague Ferguson and Tom Rietveld. Returning letter winners for the girls team were Sarah Hartman, Steph Hartman, Robin Heys and Jenny Senske.

• In their season opener the ALHS football team defeated Mankato East 21-14. Eric Palmer gained 200 yards in 30 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Tigers. Tom Krebsbach added 56 yards in 10 carries.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• Chris Baas of Albert Lea won the 74th Annual Shortstop Golf Tournament over Scott Goergen. Baas has won the tournament two years in a row and three of the last four years.

• The ALHS girls’ soccer team behind four goals by Amy Ravenhorst defeated Rochester John Marshall 4-0. Albert Lea improved to a record of two wins and two defeates.

• The ALHS football team were defeated by Mankato West 40-3 for their 30th consecutive loss. Ross Habben kicked a 26-yard field goal for the Tigers.

• Alden-Conger raised its Gopher Conference record to 3-0 with a 3-2 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. The scores of the games were 3-15, 15-8, 8-15, 19-17 and 15-10. Tasha Lackey was 26 for 28 serving with five aces.
