50 years ago – 1962

• In Big Nine Conference football Albert Lea High School defeated the Northfield Raiders 14-0. Mel Stensrud gained 111 yards and scored one touchdown. Dave Wilcox gained 83 yards and scored the second touchdown for the Tigers.

• Results in the Albert Lea City Softball League included Smith Douglas defeating Last Chance 1-0 behind the 13 strike outs and one hit pitching of Ken Sibilrud. Cabin Bar defeated Rilco 5-1 with Ken Heine the winning pitcher. Al Berg homered for the Cabin Bar.

• John Thorson threw a two hitter for Grace Lutheran in their 5-0 win over Conger in the first game of a best of three playoffs in the national division of the city church league. Zion Lutheran defeated Hayward 14-13 in the first round game of the American division.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• The ALHS girls’ volleyball team defeated Fairmont 3-0 by scores of 15-3, 15-6 and 15-10. Julie Coughlin had two ace serves, five ace hits and two blocks for Albert Lea.

• The ALHS football team ended a 14-game losing streak against Big Nine Conference teams with a 7-0 win over Rochester Mayo. Eric Palmer scored the Tigers touchdown and linebacker Matt Sullivan recorded 12 tackles.

• The ALHS girls’ tennis team defeated Faribault 5-2. Winning for the Tigers in singles were Jenny Volkenant, Melissa Nistler and Lisa Worke. Winners in doubles matches for Albert Lea were Jill Gaetze and Angie O’Byrne and the team of Jenny Breitholtz and Sheri Adams.

• The Alden-Conger-Freeborn football team improved its season record to 2-0 with an 18-7 victory over Trimont. Quarterback Bill Nelson threw touchdown passes of 35 yards to Matt Potter, 20 yards to Tim Staloch and 8 yards to Matt Potter.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The ALHS girls’ soccer team raised their season record to 2-2 with a 4-3 win over the Northfield Raiders. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Amy Ravenhorst, Laura Hillman, Brittany Arendt and Katie Dooley.

• The ALHS girls’ swimming team defeated St. Peter 95-91. Placing first for Albert Lea were seventh graders Samatha Cole in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle and Leah Matheson in the breaststroke.
