50 years ago – 1962

• The Wells High School football team recorded its 20th straight victory with a 25-7 win over Mapleton. Scoring touchdowns for the Wildcats were Dave Stussy, two, Mike Kalis and Chuck Schultz.

• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated the Faribault Falcons 20-7. Mel Stensrud gained 148 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown for the Tigers. Also scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were Dave Wilcox and Bruce Olson.

• Leallyn Turvold scored three touchdowns to lead the Northwood Vikings football team to a 26-13 win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• The Albert Lea High School volleyball team defeated Austin 3-0 by scores of 15-13, 15-4 and 15-8. Julie Coughlin had two ace serves, 11 ace hits and three ace blocks for Albert Lea. Also for Albert Lea was Jodie Ackland with two ace serves and two ace hits.

• In an opening Big Nine Conference cross-country meet the Albert Lea High School boys’ team defeated Faribault 32-22 and Rochester John Marshall 34-25. Finishing places for the Tigers were Tom Reitveld, third, Mark Pettey, fifth, Tague Ferguson, sixth, John Schneider, seventh, Blake Davis, 11th, Mike Hup, 12th, and Allan Dittrich, 14th.

• The Faribault Falcons defeated the Albert Lea High School football team 18-7. Eric Palmer gained 89 yards in 16 carries and Tom Krebsbach gained 97 yards in 15 carries for the Tigers.

• Clinching a tie for first place in the Western Division of the American League were the Minnesota Twins after their 9-1 victory over Kansas City.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The Albert Lea High School girls’ hockey team raised its Big Nine Conference record to 4-2-3 after defeating Mankato West 4-1. Laura Hillman scored two goals, Stacie Armstrong and Katie Dooley each had one goal for Albert Lea.

• Glenville-Emmons defeated Grand Meadow 3-0 in girls’ volleyball and raised its season record to 10-4. Jenna Brackey was 13-14 serving and had four aces for Wolverines.

• The United South Central football team improved to 5-0 for the season after defeating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.
