Column: Freeborn County 4-H, by Amy Wadding

The four H’s in the 4-H clover stand for head, heart, hand and health. In the 4-H pledge it says, “hands for larger service” and that is what Freeborn Country 4-H’ers are focusing on this 4-H year: pledging our hands to larger service. Right now we are doing our service part by collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester and making tie blankets for their house as well.

We are asking all of our 4-H’ers to collect the pop tabs and bring them to the Extension Office and then our ambassadors will take those pop tabs to our regional ambassador gathering and from this gathering our five counties of Freeborn, Mower, Rice, Steele and Waseca will put together the pop tab collection and the Waseca County ambassadors will be delivering the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House.

The tie blankets are being made by our after school 4-H sites. Youth from Alden-Conger School, Glenville-Emmons schools, ARC and Hawthorne, Lakeview and Halverson elementary schools have been busy making 22 tie blankets that the Freeborn County ambassadors will take to the Ronald McDonald House during our service event there in January.

Giving back is an important tool in life that we are working hard to instill in our 4-H’ers. If anyone in the community has pop tabs that they would like to donate to 4-H, please contact the Freeborn County Extension Office at 377-5660 to arrange a drop off.

4-H always has activities and learning opportunities going on. We appreciate the community support that 4-H receives. Thank you.
