Meet the Athlete: Garrett and Dakota Wangsness

Q: What year in school are you?
A: The Wangsness twins are seniors.
Q: What school do you attend?
A: Albert Lea High School.
Q: Who is your immediate family?
A: Our mother Sherry, 37; father, Jay 38; step-mother Kelly, 35; sister Hannah, 15; step-sister Alexa, 11; step-brother Aydan, 7; and half-brother Bentley, 1.
Q: How did you get started in your sport?
A: We’ve been wrestling since first grade in the youth wrestling club.
Q: What other extracurricular activities are you involved in?
A: We don’t play any other school sports, but we go deer and duck hunting, Dakota said.
Q: Did your parents play sports when they were younger?
A: No, but our sister, Hannah, is a starter on the Albert Lea dance team.
Q: What are your sports-related achievements?
A: Dakota: All-Conference and All-State the last two years. Garrett has been All-Conference the past three years and All-State last season.
Q: What are your sports-related goals?
A: Dakota: I want to place individually at state and also qualify as a team. Garrett: Going to state and getting to the finals would be great.
Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete? Why?
A: Dakota: Olympic freestyle wrestling champ Jordan Burroughs. I like his style. Garrett: Adrian Peterson, because he’s a stud.
Q: What is your favorite subject?
A: Dakota: Math. Garrett: English.
Q: Who is your favorite teacher?
A: Dakota: Larry Goodnature. Garrett: Neal Skaar.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: We like hangin’ out with friends, lifting and wrestling, Dakota said. Garrett agreed.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: Dakota and Garett both said they’d like a job in the area of business management.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Dakota: “Ted.”
Q: What is your favorite TV show?
A: Garrett: “Duck Dynasty.”
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Dakota: spaghetti. Garrett: steak.
Q: What is an interesting fact about you?
A: Dakota: I have a twin, and our whole team motivates each other. Garrett: We get along really well, and I have 14 pins this season.
