NORTHWOOD — The driver in a fatal crash last summer that killed two young girls in Worth County has been cited with traffic violations tied to the crash.
Nicole Streets, 23, of Northwood, was cited last week with failure to obey a stop sign and to yield right of way and not having a valid driver’s license. The citations were filed by the Iowa State Patrol.
Streets was a naturalist intern for the Worth County Conservation Department at the time of the crash and was taking six young girls on a canoe outing on Clear Lake as part of the county’s Naturalist in the Park program.
The crash, which killed Cassidy Stehn, 9, of Northwood, and Hana Riedinger, 12, was near Hanlontown, Iowa.
According to reports, Streets was driving southbound on Worth County Road S28 when she reportedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Iowa Highway 9 and the van was struck broadside by a semi coming eastbound on Highway 9.
Four other girls were injured, along with Streets and the semi driver, Steven Brodersen of Manly, Iowa.
The girls were all students of Northwood-Kensett Elementary School.
Streets is slated to appear in court on the citation on Jan. 24.
Worth County Attorney Jeff Greves will not prosecute the case because Streets was a county employee at the time of the crash. However, another prosecutor will be found.
