NRHEG jumps to 47-5 halftime lead

NEW RICHLAND — Total annihilation. Zero points.

That’s what happened to Randolph girls’ basketball team over the first seven minutes and 45 seconds of a game at No. 2 New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday.

NRHEG didn’t have the same offensive problems, as it raced to a 31-0 lead.

The Panthers’ Carlie Wagner hit the first shot of the game, a 3-pointer, on her way to a game-high 24 points.

Wagner converted three straight transition layups, to give NRHEG the 31-point lead.

“This is her type of game, running up and down the court,” NRHEG head coach John Schultz said. “She didn’t hit as many layups as she usually does, but she did just fine.”

Then, Randolph finally made a basket. The scoreboard read 31-2.

The Panthers kept piling on the points to take a 47-5 lead into the locker room.

The NRHEG defense held the Rockets to only two made field goals and one free throw in the first half.

“We were in the right spots on defense for the most part,” Schultz said. “We worked hard, hustled and played physical. So, I was happy with that.”

In the second half, the Panthers picked up right where they left off with dribble penetration and transition layups.

NRHEG took a 59-9 lead on a basket by Paige Overgaard.

Also scoring in double digits for the Panthers was Jade Schultz with 17 points. She also added 12 rebounds to earn a double-double.

“I thought Jade did a nice job on the boards and really got after it,” John Schultz said. “They all did pretty well.”

The Panthers improve to 12-1 on the season; their only blemish was a 57-56 loss to No. 4 Class 3A Chaska.

Next, NRHEG plays at Maple River at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
