50 years ago – 1963

• The Albert Lea High School wrestling team won the District 2 title. Champions for the Tigers were Gary Neist at 95 pounds, Ken Stauch at 112 pounds, Mike Callahan at 120 pounds, Neil Skaar at 145 pounds, Dave Posthumus at 175 pounds. and Mike Roberts at heavyweight.

• John Goodmanson of the ALHS basketball team won the Big Nine Conference scoring title with 161 points.

• The Minnesota Gopher basketball team raised their Big Ten record to 7-3 after defeating Wisconsin 72-48. The Gophers were led by Mel Northway, 22 points, Tery Kunze, 15, and Tom McGrann, 12.

 

25 years ago – 1988

• The ALHS and Apple Valley wrestling match ended in a tie at 25 points each, but Apple Valley was declared the winner by the first criteria for winning six matches to five for the Tigers. Winning matches for the Tigers were Max Bjerke at 98 pounds, Dave Rowe at 145 pounds, Eric Palmer at 155 pounds, Alex Skaar at 167 pounds and Kevin Schlitz at 185 pounds.

• Tina Wangsness scored 18 points to set the all-time basketball scoring record at Ellendale-Geneva High School in their 66-59 loss to Glenville-Emmons. Briget Matter scored 26 points and Lisa Sveen, 18, for Glenville-Emmons.

• Pam Stoltz scored the winning goal for the ALHS girls’ basketball team in their 49-48 win over Owatonna. Julie Coughlin scored 18 points and had 17 rebounds for the Tigers.

 

10 years ago – 2003

• Stacie Gaskill scored 11 points, Jacie Grotewold had 14 rebounds and Elise Kingland, 11, for the Lake Mills girls’ basketball team in their 44-37 victory over North Iowa.

• Callen Seberson of Albert Lea, bowling in the Five B’s League, bowled his second career (300) game at Holiday Lanes.

• The ALHS boys’ basketball team completed a regular season sweep over Austin with a 68-58 win. The Tigers were led by Ben Woodside with 31 points and Tyler Young with 14.

• Casey Schumaker scored 2 goals, and Egan Mattson, Adam Boelter and Wade Westland 1 each for the ALHS boys’ hockey team in their 5-2 win against Austin.
