ALHS music students compete at Solo and Ensemble contest

Albert Lea High School musicians recently competed at the Minnesota State High School League Solo and Ensemble contest at Lakeville South High School on Jan. 26. Students sang and played for judges for a score and rating of either fair, good, excellent or superior based upon their performance.
Students singing solos and earning superior ratings were Michael Whitten, Megan Gilbertson, Natalie Peek, Matt Bera, Bailey Ford, Isabel Ehrhardt, Tyler Vandenheuvel, Katie Williamson, Mallorie Gil, Ashley Holl, Lindsey Stewart, Marleny Huerta-Apanco, Megan Lindely, Quinn Andersen, Emma Behling, Abby Pleiss, Jacob Kunkel, Kelli Sanderson, Alexa Wood, Anna Englin, Elissa Brown, Lani Hanson, Solveig Lange, Kristin Sandager, Jordan Vano, Kyle Zogg and Nick Walther. Also superior performances were a trio of Bailey Ford, Rika Boorsma and Quinn Andersen and the Chorale. Soloists with an excellent rating were Rachel Kenis, Tori Helgeson, Scott Gryzbowski, Jalen Jimenez, John Buringa, Addie Fleegel, Chrissy Monson, Suzie Marin, Lindsey Freitag, Bway Shee, Hanna DeVries, Bryn Woodside, Megan Pulley, Katelyn Hendrickson, Lawrence Pederson, Erin Murtaugh, Angie Schmitt, Connor Larson, Andrew Kozelsky, Andy Ehrhardt, Savannah Simpson, Brianna Oftedahl, Ryan McLauglin, Rika Boorsma, Laura Piper, Julia Otten, Tanner Shaft, Preston Smith, Tate Tufte and Zane Aumick. Ensembles earning excellent were duets by Larry Holcomb and Marleny Huerta-Apanco, Ella and Julia Otten, the CATaclysmic Show Choir and a trio of Carissa Blizzard, Sara Rietsema and Alexa Wood. Good ratings were soloists Christina Schmidt, Carissa Blizzard, Taylor Willis, Anna Anderson, Dan Gould, Ella Otten, Carissa Fitzlaff, and a duet with Laura Piper and Kristin Sandager. In addition, Best in Site honors went to Jacob Kunkel and Jordan Vano.
The following students earned superior ratings on their band solos: Isaac Ware (snare drum), Anna Englin (alto saxophone), Jayde Bower (flute), Rika Boorsma (flute) and Maria Silva (flute). Earning excellent ratings were Zach Lind (trombone), Tyler Egge (bassoon), Katie Appel (clarinet), Chrissy Meza (oboe), Katie Callahan (clarinet), Robin Crawford (baritone saxophone), Tanner Shaft (alto saxophone), Larry Holcomb (trombone) and Taylor Northington (flute). Claire Ellis (trumpet) earned a good rating.
The following students earned superior ratings for various instrumental ensembles: Taylor Willis, Addie Fleegel, Sydney Rehnelt, Lindsey Stewart, Brent Nafzger, Collin Jahnke, Katie Appel, Emma Stensrud, Marcus Enomoto, Yuseina Brito-Lino, Hailey Johnson, Katie Appel and Nicole Borneman. Earning excellent ensemble ratings were: Nick Walther, Ryan McLaughlin, Ashley Holl, Kailie Drescher, Amber Lobb, Emerald Wangen, Isaac Ware, Jacob Kunkel, Brittney Whitten, Lindsey Snyder, Logan Callahan, Connor Larson, Brianna Oftedahl, Kayla Moen, Emerald Wangen, Britney Hunt, Brooke Johnson, Megan Lindely, Dominick Fadden, Lynzee Underdahl, Toby Schmitt, Katie Callahan, Amanda Nicholson, Amber Lobb, Brianna Opdahl, Tyler Egge, Megan Stark, Carol Lein, Brianna Oftedahl and Kelly Schroeder. Katie Callahan, Amanda Nicholson and Rebecca Allen earned a good ensemble rating.
The ALHS Symphony Orchestra went to solo and ensemble and received a superior on its performance of Corelli’s “Concerto Grosso No. 4.” In addition to performing in the large group many students prepared solos and duets. Some of the groups included a violin quartet, a viola duet, the chamber orchestra, who received an excellent on a Beethoven Quartet, and Julia Otten and Tyler Egge who received a superior on their cello duet. Performing solos were Justin Christenson, Cole Keyeski, Solveig Lange, Julia Otten and Teyera Van Hook. Jessie Olson received a superior for her viola solo and Tyler Egge received a superior for his cello solo.
