DuWayne A. Harrington, 80, of Austin, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center. He was born Sept. 6, 1932, to Roy and Bernice (Erickson) Harrington at home in Austin. DuWayne attended school in Austin, where he graduated from Austin High School in 1950. On Sept. 5, 1953, he was united in marriage with Betty Gribbe at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. DuWayne enlisted in the United States Army in 1953, serving until 1955 before attending Mankato State University, earning a degree in accounting and economics in 1958. He worked as a fireman for the Milwaukee Railroad and then for Harrington Sanitation for several years. After the business was sold, he worked various occupations and cared for his wife who suffered from multiple sclerosis. DuWayne was a collector and a pianist. He also loved to dance, draw and write. He had started writing a novel, had a children’s book published and a song recorded that he had written.
Survivors include his daughter, Lori (Michael) Balcer of Shepherd, Mont.; two brothers, Gary (Karen) Harrington of Austin, Richard (Patricia) Harrington of Kingston, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Alice Harrington of Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Bernice Harrington; his wife, Betty in 1996; and brother, Warren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Odermann officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin with military honors by American Legion Post 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1216.
