Main Street and Lakeview Boulevard were closed this weekend as area lakes rose. Some other streets also had temporary flooding, causing cars to stall.
High water on Fountain Lake either covered local streets or prevented them from draining well, which is often the case on East Main Street near Godfather’s Pizza. Some other streets, such as Hawthorne Street and Valley Avenue, had barricades for a spell this weekend.
Albert Lea received about 3 inches of rain Friday night. The Sunday morning storm delivered 0.75 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. However, that could be low because the station at the airport has been down much of the weekend.
High water on Fountain Lake inundated Katherine Island and left docks under water. Many boat lifts would not have space for boats. Some owners even tied their docks and boat lifts to shore.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday issued a no-wake restriction for boats on Fountain Lake.
“High water will deteriorate shorelines and damage docks, boats and lifts, additional avoidable waves will only accelerated deterioration and increase damage,” stated the Sheriff’s Office.
People driving around Fountain Lake Sunday morning noticed high water all along the shore. The water went over the shore in places like Edgewater Park, City Beach, New Denmark Park and Lakeview Park.
On Facebook, some local homeowners reported that their basements had water in them.
Despite the flooding, Freeborn County was not in any flood watch or warning.
According to Albert Lea police, several vehicles were reported stuck in high water early Saturday morning.
A vehicle was stuck by Morin Park at the intersection of West Main Street and St. Mary Avenue at 1:01 a.m. Saturday. Vehicles were stuck in water at the intersections of First Avenue and Front Street and Hawthorne and Valley Avenue between 2 and 3 a.m. Saturday.
During the same storm, a pontoon and a dock reportedly almost went over the dam of Fountain Lake at 12:36 a.m. Sunday. The pontoon was able to be retrieved prior to going over.
Outside of Albert Lea in the county, the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a road was about to wash out near the intersection of 220th Street and Freeborn County Road 14 at 8:53 a.m. Saturday.
