Panthers’ distance runner earns 2nd podium finish

ST. PAUL — T.J. Schiltz of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva medaled in both of his events at the Class A state track and field meet.

Schiltz, a junior, followed his eighth-place performance in the Class A 3,200-meter run on Friday by earning fifth place in the 1,600-meter run on Saturday.

“These are the meets I like to run in, because I have a horrible time pacing myself when I’m way ahead,” Schiltz said. “I like these because there are so many good people to chase after.”

Two thirds of the 15-participant field was chasing Schiltz to the finish line, including Charlie Lawrence of Perham, this year’s 3,200-meter Class A state champion.

Schiltz finished with his fastest time of the season: 4:28.18, which broke his previous best: 4:28.18.
