Evangelene M. Meyer, 85, of Walters, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at Parkview Care Center in Wells.

Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells will host visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today and for one hour prior to the funeral at United Lutheran Church in Walters. The funeral service starts at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Don Rose officiating. Interment will be at United Lutheran Cemetery in rural Walters following the service.

Evangelene Marie Meyer was born on April 30, 1928, in Faribault County, the daughter of Otto J. and Orvesta Ernestina (Scherb) Ahnemann. She graduated from Alden High School in 1945 and was united in marriage to Orlando W. Meyer at St. John’s Lutheran in Walters on Sept. 30, 1948.

Baptized, confirmed and married in St. John’s Lutheran Church, she was the organist for more than 20 years until her three oldest sons took over. She remained active at United Lutheran in quilting, women’s groups, LYO adviser and other activities. Vannie also volunteered and played piano at Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea for more than 20 years leading residents in hymn sing and other activities.

Evangelene made sure all her boys had piano, organ and instrumental lessons and was diligent in monitoring their practice.

At home she was active in all aspects of farming and operated all equipment except the combine. At home she specialized in yeast dough buns and rolls and was an immaculate seamstress for her own clothes, along with many items for her family, including her burial dress.

Survivors include her loving husband, Orlando of Walters; five sons, Nathan (Cecilia) Meyer, Germantown, Md., Sheldon (Holly) Meyer, Lake Crystal, Clinton Meyer, Walters, Dayton Meyer, Wilmington, Del., and Jesse (Divera) Lutabingwa, Boone, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bethany Meyer (fiancé Rob Higgins), Minneapolis, Erin Meyer, Burnsville and David and Jonathan Lutabingwa, Boone, N.C.; siblings, Darryl (Gloria) Ahnemann, Windsor Heights, Des Moines, Iowa, and Dwight (Marilyn) Ahnemann, Eau Claire, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Velva Oothoudt, Winnebago, Marian Ahnemann, Albert Lea, and Mildred Meyer, Stewartville; along with numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Edgar Ahnemann.
