Richard Ulve, 88, Albert Lea

Memorial services for Richard “Dick” Ulve will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by local veterans’ organizations; VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Online condolences are welcome at www.bayviewfuneral.com.

Dick died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society.

Richard Erwin Ulve was born on Jan. 2, 1925, to Gerhard Irving and Alice Mae (Westland) Ulve in Lake Mills. Dick grew up in the Albert Lea area where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1943. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. He was confirmed there in 1939, later served on the finance committee and was an usher and deacon. In 1943, Dick enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the USS CARD as a signalman 3/c in the Atlantic-Pacific. Dick received the presidential unit citation for sinking 11 German submarines. On May 23, 1948, Dick was united in marriage to Jeanne Lorraine Severson at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. He was a 37-year employee of Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. in Albert Lea. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, USS-CARD (CVE-11) Association and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Dick was very proud of his accomplishments in life. He and Jeanne took great joy in their family and enthusiastically participated in all of their activities.

Survivors include his children, Brian Ulve, of Rifle, Colo., Janet Ulve of Inver Grove Heights, Reid (Sherry) Ulve of Albert Lea and Carolyn (Kevin) Johnson of Rochester; grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Ulve, Ryan Ulve, Emily (Trevor) Kruger, Joshua Johnson and Taryn (fiancé Tyler Sutherland) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Alex Ulve, Blake Ulve, Casey Ulve, Drew Ulve, Kelsey Kruger, Ethan Kruger and Katelyn Kruger; sister, Marjorie (William) Schaffer; brother, Keith Ulve; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanne; and sisters and brothers-in-law.

He will be dearly missed by his family. They will all hold him close to their hearts until they reunite in heaven.
