Glenville-Emmons falls to LeRoy-Ostrander

GLENVILLE — When Jared Matson took the head coach position at Glenville-Emmons, he knew that turning the Wolverines around would be a process.
Glenville-Emmons fell 51-6 to LeRoy-Ostrander on Wednesday night at home. The teams also met Aug. 30, and the Wolverines lost 46-6. Glenville-Emmons fell to 0-8 on the season and will play the top-seeded team in Section 1 9-Man on Tuesday.
“We just need to come out ready to play from the first whistle,” Matson said. “That was the main thing.”
Though the wins haven’t been there to support it, Matson said he’s seen improvement in the squad since taking the job.

“We come into these games, and we’re always outsized and outnumbered,” Matson said. “Going into the section game, we just want to get some younger guys some good minutes, good reps and then hopefully find something to build on for next year and into the offseason. I know we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but we see some things that are good.”
Glenville-Emmons’ offense showed flashes of productivity on Wednesday. The problem was that most positive plays seemed to be negated by a penalty.
The Wolverines were able to light up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Justice Haines found Derek Van Ryswyk on a short touchdown pass, but the game was out of reach at that point.
The Wolverines defensive line was able to sack LeRoy-Ostrander quarterback Jace Bunne multiple times, which helped the team’s secondary cover the Cardinals’ talented receivers in the second half.
“Toward the middle of the second half, we just told them to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback,” Matson said. “It helped our coverage out, because they didn’t have to cover as long. It was good to see those guys get after the quarterback; it was something we’ve missed the past few games.”
Because students don’t have class Thursday and Friday, the team won’t have a lot of time to practice before Tuesday’s game. That fact doesn’t concern Matson.
“It’s a short week. We’ve been used to that lately with a that rescheduled game (at Houston on Oct. 8) and now this week too,” Matson said. “We’re just hoping to get healthy for Tuesday.”
