ST. PAUL — After a debate spanning months, a Capitol security task force is closing in on recommendations about gun-carrying in the building.

The advisory committee was meeting today to work on a report that will be issued to state lawmakers early next year. The panel has been grappling with how to account for permitted handgun owners who are allowed to have firearms in the Capitol.

Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon has said she favors a standardized form that gun owners would have to fill out. It would be more precise than a current system of notification.

The Department of Public Safety has received verbal or written notice from more than 800 people about carrying a gun. But the agency doesn’t always verify if a person has a valid gun permit.
