DULUTH — The Diocese of Duluth has released the names of 17 priests whom it says were credibly accused of sexual abuse.

Thirteen have died. All 17 were removed from the church, are under investigation or were dead when the accusations arose.

The list also mentions five priests with ties to the area, who were accused while working elsewhere.

Tuesday’s release comes several weeks after a lawsuit was filed asking that information on the 17 priests be released.

Duluth Bishop Paul Sirba calls the history of abuse in the church “a sad truth that must be acknowledged.”

“These clergy have caused terrible harm to victims, to the victims’ families, to our community, to the Church and to the many, many good priests who faithfully carry out their duties to God’s people with love and generosity,” Sirba said.

The list included the following priests:

• Kirby Blanchard, deceased

• Louis Brouillard, Pine City

• Victor Chateauvert, deceased

• Leonard Colston, deceased

• Raymond Cossette, Brainerd

• Frederick Fox, deceased

• John Golobich, deceased

• Ralph Goniea, deceased

• Robert Klein, deceased

• Mark Makowski, Sun City, Ariz.

• Thomas Gregory Manning, deceased

• John Nicholson, deceased

• Dennis Puhl, deceased

• Thomas Stack, deceased

• Joseph Thibaudeau, deceased

• Stephen Toporowitz, deceased

• Angelo Zankl, deceased

Within the past few weeks the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Winona released lists of credibly accused priests, complying with a court order.

No local priests were on the Duluth list.
