Ronald Severson, 74, Northwood

Ronald “Ron” “Bump” Severson, 74, of Northwood, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A visitation for Bump will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood. Inurnment will take place in the spring in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood and military honors will be accorded.

Ronald James Severson was born on June 28, 1939, in rural Grafton, Iowa, the son of Roy and Mabel (Greiner) Severson. He was baptized in Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, Iowa, and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa. He attended Carpenter Consolidated Schools and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1957. Bump worked for a short time on the Pete Hanson farm in Otranto.

He was inducted into the Army on Aug. 23, 1960, and served his country honorably and faithfully until his discharge on Aug. 7, 1963. After being discharged from the Army, he began working for Oliver Company in Charles City before starting with Streater Co. in Albert Lea working for 33 years until his retirement. After his retirement he worked for a short time as a custodian for the United States Postal Service in Northwood.

He was united in marriage to Betty Luther on Feb. 13, 1965, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, and to this marriage two children were born, Daniel and Dawn.

Bump loved his family and grandchildren and enjoyed going to all their sporting events, especially of his best friend and grandson, Michael. Bump also enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to his cabin in Waterville.

He was a member of the Glenville VFW for 30 years and a member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children Daniel Severson of Manly, Iowa, and Dawn (Troy) Bachtle of Northwood; his grandchildren and best friend, Michael Bachtle of Northwood and his fiancee, Kaitlyn Goplerud, of St. Ansgar, Brooke (Adam) Nerlien of Clarion, Iowa, Brett Bachtle of Northwood and Kaylyn and Jenna Severson of Manly; great-grandchildren Harper and Elliet Nerlien, both of Clarion; siblings Richard (Karen) Severson of Manly, Sam Severson of St. Ansgar and Marilyn O’Connor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Verlin Severson.
