ROCHESTER — A friendly conversation between a convenience store clerk and a Rochester police officer led to three arrests.
Capt. John Sherwin said an officer was paying for his items just after 2 a.m. Friday when the clerk said a customer had tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. As the officer was about to drive off, the clerk used the intercom to call him back in because another customer was trying to pass a bogus bill.
The customer then opened his wallet to pay with a dollar instead, and the officer noticed what seemed to be more counterfeit bills.
The 26-year-old Winona man was arrested. The driver waiting for him took off.
Police found the car at a motel, where they arrested a 35-year-old Winona man and a 29-year-old Crookston woman.
