Five days will be added to the Albert Lea school calendar to make up for days canceled due to bad weather.

The Albert Lea school board approved a modified calendar for the school year at its meeting Feb. 3.

The changes include replacing a K-5 conference day with a school day on March 21, replacing a staff development and prep day with a school day on April 4, moving that staff development and prep day to April 18, adding June 6 as a school day and moving a staff development and prep day to June 9.

June 5, a Thursday, had been the last day of school. Now it will be June 6.

No class time will be made up on Good Friday or during spring break, which is March 3-7.

Superintendent Mike Funk said the changes are more productive than adding days on at the end of the school year.

He said he avoided spring break, as some districts have done, because staff, students and parents have made plans.

The last day of school for seniors will be decided during fourth quarter. Seniors will graduate on June 6 as scheduled.

This will be the last modification to the calendar unless the district falls below the threshold set by the Minnesota Department of Education. State guidelines require 165 days minimum in a school year.
