A 38-year-old Albert Lea man is facing assault charges after he reportedly cut another man with a knife and then assaulted a woman last week.
Michael Anthony Madrigal faces one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly cutting the man on the wrist and one count of domestic assault tied to the alleged assault of the woman.
The assaults reportedly took place at an apartment at 208 S. Broadway early Thursday morning.
Freeborn County District Court records did not indicate the size or type of knife but stated Madrigal reportedly got the knife from the kitchen of the apartment.
The man who was cut told police he was injured when he put his hands up to protect himself as Madrigal swung the knife at him. Both the man and woman transported themselves to the Albert Lea emergency room.
Madrigal, according to court files, gave conflicting reports of what happened during an interview with police. At one time he said the man pulled a fork on him and in response he pulled out the knife, and then another time he denied having the knife altogether.
Freeborn County District Court Judge Steve Schwab ordered Madrigal be held in the Freeborn County jail on a $35,000 conditional bail.
Madrigal was convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault in 2005.
