2 injured in East Main Street crash

A husband and wife from Mason City were seriously injured Friday afternoon after their car was struck by a semi on East Main Street.

Robert Nelson, 84, was reportedly driving eastbound on Main Street in a 2010 Honda Accord when he turned north toward Trumble’s Restaurant into the path of an oncoming semi, driven by Gary Stepka, 57, of Prior Lake.

The semi struck the passenger side of the vehicle, in which Nelson’s wife, Dorthy, 86, was seated.

Albert Lea Police Department Lt. Darren Hanson stated Dorthy Nelson was transported by helicopter to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, and Robert Nelson was transported by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Their conditions as of press time were unknown. Stepka was not injured.

Hanson said the semi was estimated to be traveling 40 mph when it struck the car. The crash took place at 2:42 p.m.
