Gov. Dayton avoids marijuana issue

This letter is in regard to the AP article, “Medical marijuana makes gains,” in the Albert Lea Tribune on Feb. 24.
The article states Gov. Mark Dayton’s encouragement of citizens to “negotiate” wilth local law enforcement, to get them “on board,” with the medical marijuana Issue.
Since when does law enforcement dictate the laws of society? Their job is to enforce the law. We make it. Who wants to argue with law enforcement about a substance that’s currently illegal and face retribution? That’s the governor’s way of saying “I’m not dealing with it.”
From law enforcement to the huge medical and drug industry (connected to the retail industry), which Mark Dayton has been no small part of, there are plenty of reasons offered to lawmakers and the public alike as to why legalization is a bad idea. They fail to mention their profit motives.
In this day and age, when people are so afraid (and rightly so) of all of the drugs and medications that are being pushed on them, when people are suffering and we know of something that costs almost nothing, holds great promise, and hope for the economy, shouldn’t we embrace it? Who ever heard of an illegal plant? We should be able to grow this stuff in our own backyards.
