Albert Lea residents from all backgrounds are invited to attend A Taste of Heritage Saturday at the Northbridge Mall.

The event, which is slated for 1 to 3 p.m., will include free entertainment, displays, food samples and children’s activities.

This is the fifth year for the event.

“We just want to introduce people to the cultures that are now and have been in the Albert Lea area,” said Teresa Kauffmann, who is a part of the committee planning the event.

Kauffmann said 80 children from Albert Lea elementary schools will perform, along with dancers from the Karen community, a Mariachi band from Austin and dancers from the Czech Republic.

There will be displays with information about South Sudan, Mexico, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Nepal, Burma, Cuba, Germany, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia.

There will also be a children’s room of activities. Children will get a passport when they come in, which they can get stamped as they visit each display table.

Kauffmann said several hundred people attended the event in 2013.

A Taste of Heritage is sponsored by the Albert Lea Human Rights Commission, Riverland Community College Multicultural Services, Albert Lea Convention & Visitors Bureau, Freeborn County Historical Society, Roland Hanson and Kay L. Hanson Foundation and the Alliance for Educational Equity.
