Weekend Planner: Duathlon takes athletes all around Albert Lea

The Land Between the Lakes Duathlon, hosted by Albert Lea Noon Kiwanis, will have teams of racers biking through the countryside and running by the lakes of Albert Lea this weekend.
The duathlon starts at 9 a.m. Sunday at Edgewater Park, but the area opens at 6:30 a.m. Racers can pick up their packets from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the race or 6 to 8 p.m. the night before at Country Inn & Suites.
Racers should be at Edgewater Park before 8:30 a.m. as check-in and body marking is done at that time. At 8:40 a.m. there will be a pre-race meeting.
Racers will start and transition between legs at Edgewater Park. The race will start with a two-mile run inside of Edgewater Park. Racers will then transition to a 14-mile bike ride through the area countryside. Finally, racers will finish with a nearly three mile run along Edgewater and Fountain Lakes.
Participants can register online as an individual or a team. There are a variety of age categories from 19 to 70+ for males and females. There are also weight categories; Clydesdale is for men over 200 pounds and Athena is for women over 145 pounds.

Friday
• St. John’s Lutheran Community will hold a plant sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Highway 13 parking lot. A variety of perennials and bedding plants will be available. Proceeds go to the resident’s garden program.
• Enjoy the music of the Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison, performed by the DC Drifters at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15.
Saturday
• The Young Eagles will have their flight rally at 7:30 a.m. at the Albert Lea Airport, 400 Airport Road.
• The annual Shades of Jade plant sale will sell plants to benefit the Higbie Community Garden from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale will be at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave.
• The six-legged 5k walk/run occurs at 9 a.m. at the Ranch & Pet Supply parking lot, 2014 E. Main St., with registration at 8 a.m. Registration is $20 per person, $30 day of event.
• Come buy some fresh produce, baked goods and more at the Albert Lea Farmers Market at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave, from 9 a.m. to noon.
• Mayo Clinic Health System of Albert Lea’s bereavement camp will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Any kindergarten through 12th-grade student who has experienced the death of a loved one who registered before May 2 is welcome. The camp will be at Brookside Education Center, 211 W. Richway Drive.
• Volunteer to help clean, paint, plant or pick up trash for Downtown clean-up day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interested volunteers can meet at Celebrations Party and Gifts, 122 S. Broadway Ave.
• Celebrate young artists at the Alden-Conger art show from noon to 4 p.m. The show will be at the Blackhawk Gym, 215 N. Broadway, Alden.
• Unlimited Possibilities dance studio will perform “Music Behind the Movies” at 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea High School auditorium, 2000 Tiger Lane.
• Try swing dancing the third Saturday of every month at Prairie Wind Coffee, 211 S. Broadway Ave., from 7 to 11 p.m.
• Ladies Night has a lot to offer, with booths showcasing collections from women’s home-based businesses. Each booth has prizes and cash available to win. Ladies Night is at America’s Best Value Inn, 2306 E. Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m.
• Celebrate the sounds of Scotland and Ireland with the Celtic Memories concert. Tickets are $13 and are available from the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau. The concert is from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave.
• Experience the music of the Tex Pistols from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Lighthouse Theatre and Event Center, 621 Marshall St. Tickets are $15 advance, $20 at the door, and are available at Hy-Vee and Stadheim Jewelers in Albert Lea.
Sunday
• Enjoy the Amaranth Pancake Breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served. Entrance is $7 and runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave.
• Alano Society of Albert Lea is hosting a breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon. Price is $6 and includes pancakes, french toast, eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, toast, orange juice and coffee. The breakfast will be held at 1005 N. Ulstad Ave.
• Community Lutheran Church, 106 Third St., Geneva, is hosting their 12th annual meatball dinner. Enjoy meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, coleslaw, rolls and pie from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted, and there will be $1 raffles for a homemade quilt.
• Seniors from Northwood-Kensett High School will graduate at 1:30 p.m. at 704 N. Seventh St., Northwood.
• Seniors from Lake Mills High School will graduate at 2 p.m. at 102 S. Fourth Ave., Lake Mills.
• Enjoy a free concert from 3 to 4 p.m. with the Albert Lea Community Band’s 36th Spring Concert. The band will play a great variety of music, from marches to Disney tunes.
• Unlimited Possibilities will perform “Music Behind the Movies” at 3 p.m. at the ALHS auditorium.
