HARTLAND — My name is Emily Light and I am the 2014 Freeborn County 4-H summer intern. I reside in rural Hartland with my parents, Randy and Carol Light, and my younger sister, Hannah. This fall I will return to South Dakota State University for my senior year of college. In May of 2015 I will be graduating with a degree in agriculture communications. After graduating I hope to land a job with University of Minnesota Extension.

For 13 years I was part of the Hartland 4-H club, which is one of the clubs affiliated with Freeborn County 4-H. Being a member of 4-H, I did a number of various non-livestock projects: safety, food and nutrition, child development, photography, forestry and self-determined. For seven years I was involved with the swine project. My interests in 4-H grew throughout the years. I was getting myself involved in more leadership roles: county ambassador, youth leader, exhibit building manager, club reporter, club treasurer as well as club and county secretary. I enjoyed being a leader and helping where ever help was needed.

Being a summer intern for Freeborn County 4-H means I plan a lot of summer day camps, gardening sessions, organizing various shows during the county fair and anything that the program coordinators, Megan and Amy, ask me to do. As an intern I hope to gain more insight about what happens behind the scenes working within the county. I am thankful to have this opportunity working with Freeborn County 4-H and being able to grow from this experience. “Make the better best, never let it rest till the good is better and the better is best!”
