ST. PAUL — St. Paul police say a man involved in a carjacking died in an exchange of gunfire with officers.
Sgt. Paul Paulos said the man crashed his vehicle into a fence Sunday afternoon. The man fired at bystanders before carjacking an SUV at gunpoint. Two people were in the vehicle at the time.
Paulos said the suspect shot at officers when they tried to stop him. Police fired back and shot the man. Paulos said he died on the way to the hospital.
Paulos said a teenage bystander suffered a non-life-threatening injury. He’s being treated at Children’s Hospital. Paulos said it’s unclear if he was hit by a bullet or shrapnel.
He said two officers suffered minor injuries. Four officers involved were placed on three-day administrative leave, following standard policy.
