MONTEVIDEO — Two brothers have died after a small airplane crashed soon after takeoff in western Minnesota.

The Chippewa County sheriff’s office said the two-passenger plane crashed about 3:45 p.m. Sunday into a soybean field on the northern edge of Montevideo.

Killed were Mark Schultz of Sleepy Eye and 51-year-old Steven Schultz of Brooklyn Center. Authorities have not said who was piloting the plane.

Mark Schultz was a vice president at First Security Bank in Sleepy Eye.

According to the sheriff’s office, soon after taking off from the Montevideo-Chippewa County Airport the plane turned left and the right wing “just went straight up, like it had caught a gust of wind” before crashing.
