WINONA — Winona County authorities said crews have pulled a car from the Mississippi River that was reported stolen 14 years ago.

Sheriff Dave Brand said Thursday that the Army Corps of Engineers found the car while dredging the river Tuesday. Crews retrieved the car from about 6 feet of water near Winona.

Investigators said license tabs on the four-door blue Oldsmobile expired in 2000 and there were still keys in the ignition. The plates tracked back to owners who reported the car stolen from their driveway in the fall of 2000.

Bran said it’s unclear how long it was submerged. He said the Sheriff’s Office isn’t pursing an investigation but the Winona Police Department could look into the case.

Brand said the owners have moved to Wisconsin.
