Albert Lea falls against Winona

In its regular-season finale on Senior Night, the Albert Lea volleyball team started strong but fell 3-1 Tuesday against Winona.

The Tigers won the first set 25-21, but the Winhawks won the rest 25-18, 25-15 and 25-21.

“We started playing well tonight and were in command for the entire first set,” said Albert Lea coach Lisa Deyak. “After that, we struggled to play aggressively. Tentative play will not win matches in the Big Nine.”

Hope Landsman led the Tigers with 10 kills to go with 16 digs. Bethany Tennis posted a team-high 19 digs, and Julia Deyak led the team with 33 assists and four ace serves. Kassi Hardies had a team-high four blocks.

Albert Lea (6-18 overall, 3-8 Big Nine Conference) finished the season with conference wins over Northfield, Red Wing and Austin.

The Tigers are 3-8 in Section 1AAA and are 10th in the 12-team standings. Next, Albert Lea will play at 7 p.m. next Wednesday in the first round of the section tournament. Seeds have not been determined.
