50 years ago: 1964 

• The Albert Lea football team defeated Austin for the second year in a row, 27-19. The Tigers trailed 12-0 after the first quarter and rallied with 20 points in the second quarter.

• Alden defeated Delavan 63-6, and Kiester was victorious over Bricelyn 46-14 to remain tied for first place in the Border League. Bob Hoeg scored four touchdowns for Alden in its 24th win in a row. Larry Roalstad led Kiester with three touchdowns.

25 years ago: 1989

• In one of the biggest trades in the NFL history, the Minnesota Vikings traded five players to get Herschel Walker from the Dallas Cowboys.

• In his first game with the Minnesota Vikings, Walker rushed for 148 yards to lead the Vikings to a 26-14 win over Green Bay and a 4-2 league record.

• Halfback Chad Bohonek of the Albert Lea football team rushed for 198 yards — including a 67-yard touchdown — in the Tigers 24-14 win.

• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Austin 3-0 by scores of 15-12, 15-6 and 15-10. Jodi Bumpus was 12-of-12, and Lori Coughlin was 17-of-19 serving for Albert Lea.

• The Northwood-Kensett football team defeated Belmond 18-7 to win its homecoming game and its first game of the year. Kevin Petznick rushed for 78 yards for the Vikings.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Austin 3-2 by scores of 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 15-12. Stacie Thisius was 21-of-21 serving, Heather Hovland, 13-of-14 and Stacy Schlobohm 12-of-13.

• The NRHEG football team defeated United South Central 25-14 to raise its season record to 6-1 and its Gopher Valley Conference record to 5-1. Jason Lennox scored four touchdowns and ran for 273 yards on 26 carries for the Panthers.

• The Alden-Conger volleyball team shut out Randolph 3-0. Jenny Krueger had 11 kills, and Emily Appel added eight for Alden-Conger.
