Ice castle to open in Eden Prairie this winter

EDEN PRAIRIE — A shimmering ice castle creation is returning to Minnesota this winter.

Crews have spent the past few weeks preparing the site of the acre-sized icy palace in Eden Prairie’s Miller Park. On Monday they expect to turn on the water, and the ice will start going up.

Two winters ago, Utah-based Brent Christensen built an ice castle outside the Mall of America in Bloomington. Instead of using blocks to build a traditional ice castle, Christensen uses icicles and water to make a towering, glacier-like structure.

Thousands of LED lights are embedded in the ice, giving the castle’s icicles a sparkle.

The Eden Prairie ice castle is expected to be open to the public Dec. 26 through March 2015, weather permitting.
