Neighbor district would benefit

I would like to take this opportunity to share my opinion of the proposed balanced calendar, especially after the failed attempt to get a vote from licensed staff.
I have been teaching special education students since 1978 and am nearing the golden years of retirement. I have seen many changes in the schools and witnessed firsthand the struggles of our low-income families. I understand the desire to help the students who are struggling at school as well as at home.
I am not in favor of the proposed balanced calendar for several reasons. I think there are many other ways to boost our student’s test scores than changing the days they come to school. I feel this change would be just one more complication that these families have to deal with. I am also concerned that those families that are especially against the balanced calendar, will open enroll their children outside the district. Alden-Conger Schools makes this very simple by offering transportation. Can District 241 really afford to lose anymore students?
I would like to become a part of a committee that looks into the options that may be considered in helping our students achieve their best potential. I think the district has a wealth of educated, experienced and compassionate teachers who could offer valuable insight, but their opinion needs to be valued without the threat of repercussions.
I understand how difficult this decision is and appreciate the attempts in gathering community input.
