50 years ago: 1964
• The New Richland football team improved to 7-0 in the Gopher Conference after defeating Ellendale 26-14. Bruce Babcock returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for New Richland.
• The Minnesota Vikings defeated the San Francisco 49ers 27-22 despite a play where San Francisco defensive end Jim Marshall stole the ball from Billy Kilmer and scored a touchdown. Viking defensive end Carl Eller picked up quarterback George Mira’s fumble and ran 45 yards for the winning touchdown.
• Gary Purdy scored three touchdowns for Alden in its 67-7 win over Emmons to raise its league record to 7-0.
25 years ago – 1989
• Heather Amundson of Northwood-Kensett finished second at the Iowa Class 1A cross country meet for the third straight time.
• Arnie Stadheim of Albert Lea shot a hole-in-one at the Edgewater Golf Course on the par 3, 165-yard fifth hole.
• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference boys’ cross country team from Albert Lea were Jon Edson and Toby Firueron. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention were Allan Dittrich and Todd Williamschen.
• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference girls’ cross country team from Albert Lea were Jenna Seul and Amy Stay. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention was Robin Heyes.
10 years ago – 2004
• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team defeated Waseca 103-53. The 200-yard medley relay team of Kaeli Wayne, Leah Matheson, Samantha Cole and Whitney Walters was victorious along with the 400 freestyle team of Rachael Hagen, Alyssa Nelson, Mallory Carstens and Walters. Krista Horejsi won the 200 freestyle.
• Lake Mills — the No. 5-ranked volleyball team in Class 2A in Iowa — defeated Belmond- Klemme 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-9 and 25-12. Megan Peterson was 16-for-16 serving with eight kills. Sarah Abele and Jennie Finer were 13-for-13 serving, and Lacey Mathews had seven kills for the Bulldogs.
• In the first round of the Section 2AA football playoffs, NRHEG defeated Montgomery-Lonsdale 49-22. Brian Bos rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.
