The Humane Society of Freeborn County began a special adoption initiative today that runs through the month of December.
Called Home for the Holidays, the event aims to find homes for cats and dogs at the shelter.
One of the organizers, Dee Amberg, said there are 53 cats and kittens available for adoption, including some that are older or with special needs, and others that came in as kittens and have been at the shelter for at least six months.
She said there are also large and small dogs.
Adoptions are $25 for cats and kittens and $75 for dogs. An application must be approved for all animals.
People can meet the animals by stopping in at the shelter, at 101 James Ave., or by coming to a special adoption event at Ranch & Pet Supply, 2014 E. Main St., on Dec. 13.
Amberg said at least six cats will be at this event, along with other small dogs and a mother dog and her four puggle puppies. She said the puppies — two boys and two girls — will not be able to be adopted until the middle of January when they are eight weeks old.
Refreshments will be served.
The shelter is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
It can be reached at 377-8501.
