ST. PAUL — Minnesota lawmakers in both parties have been talking about coming up with more money for transportation next year. The big question come January will be whether they’re serious.

The last big boost for roads, bridges and mass transit came six years ago. A big part of that came from lawmakers overriding a veto to raise the gas tax.

State officials say they need at least $6 billion in the next two decades to take care of existing roads and build more to address congestion and safety issues.

Mass transit supporters say their needs should be addressed, too.

Gov. Mark Dayton and Senate Democrats say they’ll seek some new transportation taxes. Republicans would prefer some other way.
