BLAINE — Minnesota might lose its only race track for bicyclists.
The Olympic-caliber velodrome in Blaine with its wooden track is in disrepair and is in need of $60,000 to keep it going. Staff members at the National Sports Center have recommended to the board that the structure be torn down.
Center spokesman Barclay Kruse said the 250-meter velodrome has lasted longer than was expected. The track was built in 1990 and had a lifespan of 20 years.
A newly-formed group Friends of Velodrome Racing in Minnesota has raised $30,000 so far to keep the track up and running. The organization held a silent auction and raffle Sunday night at Fulton Brewery to support its cause.
