Duane died unexpectedly at his daughter’s home in Mesa, Arizona, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015. He was 78.
He was born March 7, 1936, in Austin, the son of Leonard and Lillian (Gulbrandson) Judd. He graduated from Pacelli High School in Austin. Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 and received his honorary discharge in 1960. He also had been active in the National Guard.
Duane married Magdalen “Maggie” Miller Jan. 13, 1962, and they made their home in Albert Lea.
He was employed by Streater in Albert Lea for 32 years before retiring in 2001. He had been a member of St. Theodore Catholic Church, the Eagles, Moose and AMVETS. He enjoyed taking in auctions, rummage sales and going to the casino. Fishing, trips to Ely, his CB radio club and caring for his beloved dogs were favorite pastimes. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren and his embellished stories, “good advice” and never ending pranks will always be great memories.
Those left to cherish Duane’s memory are wife, Magdalen “Maggie;” children Teresa Judd (Javier Tabares) of Mesa, David Judd of Owatonna, Ruth Judd (Miguel Garcia) of Albert Lea, John (Stacy) Judd of Albert Lea and Joann (Mark) Oakland of Albert Lea; grandchildren Anthony (Tami) Charlton, Gonsalo Tabares (Randi), Alexander Tabares (Katie), Angela Judd (Junior), Tabitha Caballero, Miguel Garcia, Jessica (Ryan) Walters, Sara Judd, Matthew Judd, Calob Oakland, Chloe Oakland, Chaz Oakland and Courtney Oakland; great-grandchildren Katelynn Charlton, Chandler Charlton, Andre Judd, Logan Kilen and Landon Walters; brothers James Judd of St. Paul and Mike Judd of Austin; sisters Mary Ann Ruffins of Albert Lea and Barbara (Ron) Huffman of Austin; sisters-in-law Helen Judd, Dolores Judd and Anna Miller, all of Austin, and MaryEllen Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Keith and Wayne; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Clarence, Ivan and Victor Miller, John Ruffins and Mary Ann and Gene Mayer.
Duane will be remembered as being the good-spirited jokester of the group, and the always-present glint in his eye will be greatly missed.
