First bills hit at Legislature, showing priorities

ST. PAUL — The showcase bills of the new Minnesota legislative session are being trotted out.

The Democrats who run the Senate and the Republicans leading the House planned to roll out their respective top bills today. They represent the symbolic priorities of each governing party.

Leaders of both chambers have dropped a few clues this week, saying economic development and education measures will be in the lineup. But the approach on both topics is sure to differ.

House Files one through five were being introduced in that chamber, while Democratic senators were putting out an initial six proposals.

The Legislature convened its 2015 session on Tuesday, and lawmakers are settling in for five months of deliberations.
