ST. PAUL — Minnesota lawmakers are returning to action in a session where they’ll have to navigate a new political dynamic and widespread Capitol construction.

The five-month session starts at noon today.

It’s when Republicans formally regain House control.

The first day is usually reserved for ceremony, as new and returning lawmakers get sworn in. The House will elect a speaker, but it’s a process with little mystery. Republican Rep. Kurt Daudt has already lined up sufficient votes to win the job.

The Senate wasn’t on November’s ballot, so Democrats return with their majority intact.

Apart from time-sensitive bills to replenish a disaster relief fund and adjust the tax code to meet federal changes, most big decisions will come closer to the end.

The session is required to conclude by May 18.
