Sue VeLois Strand, 81, of Springfield, Illinois, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at Memorial Medical Center.

Sue was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Albert Lea, the daughter of Leland and Gretchen VeLois Johnston Steil. She married Carl Strand Nov. 26, 1966, in Albert Lea.

Sue was a graduate of Albert Lea High School in Albert Lea and Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester. She retired from Sangamon County Department of Public Health after 17 years of service as a registered nurse.

Sue was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Great Books Club, Job’s Daughters and Kahler Alumni Group. Sue was very involved in local sports and was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed travelling, reading, flowers and spending time with her family.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Strand; one son, Jeffrey (Pamela) Strand, of Yardley, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Jack, Gretchen and Nathaniel Strand; three brothers, Lyman Steil of St. Paul, Thomas (Karel) Steil of Cottage Grove and Gregory Steil of Albert Lea; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. Sixth St. in Springfield.

A celebration of life will be at  9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
