MINNEAPOLIS — A daylong protest at University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler’s office has ended with 13 demonstrators arrested.
The students and their supporters were demanding greater on-campus racial and ethnic diversity.
Sixteen people began the protest around 11:30 a.m. Monday in Morrill Hall. The university said it warned demonstrators they would be trespassing if they stayed after the building closed.
After the building closed at 6 p.m., the university said protesters were given a chance to leave freely, and three did. Thirteen protesters remained in Kaler’s office and were arrested without incident.
The university said it took the action “as a last resort after trying to have a dialogue for nearly seven hours.”
The protesters’ demands include greater racial and ethnic diversity in university hiring practices.
