Bruce Marvin Ulland, 82, of Austin passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Hospital St. Marys Campus in Rochester.
Bruce was born Nov. 5, 1932, to Charles and Leone (Bunker) Ulland in Mower County. He grew up in rural Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1951. He began apprentice carpentering while still in school. Bruce entered the U.S. Navy in February 1952 and served four years, mainly in Guam and Florida.
On June 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon Winjum at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church in rural Albert Lea. Together they had a house-building and remodeling business for nearly 50 years. Bruce enjoyed spending time with his family, doing building projects and hobby farming. Many young men developed carpentering skills working with Bruce, including his sons, grandson and also his daughter; he enjoyed working with every one of them. Bruce had a patient and good-natured way. He had the privilege to work with many nice people, including fellow contractors, customers and employees. He liked to start the day with a cup of coffee on the dash and a trip to the lumberyard to pick up materials and a bit of the latest gossip.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Sharon Ulland, of Austin; his sons Randy (Joy Frevel) Ulland of Minneapolis and Tim Ulland of Austin; his daughter, Grace (Wade) Johnson, of Spring Valley; his grandchildren Andrew (Stephanie) Ulland of Austin, Sydney and Sophia Johnson of Spring Valley and Elise Frevel (Chris Peterson) of Daytona Beach, Florida; his great-grandchildren Claire and Isabelle Noyes of Austin and Kaelyn and Julia Peterson of Daytona Beach; his sister and brother-in-law Lillian and Dan Peterson of Fort Worth, Texas; his brothers and sisters-in-law Lee and Doris Ulland of Burlington, Wisconsin, and Arnold and Nancy Ulland of Spring Branch, Texas; sisters-in-law Phyllis Ulland of Hollandale and Elaine (Ray) King of Albert Lea; brothers-in-law Tom (Cela) Winjum of Albert Lea and Bud Winjum of New Richland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Leone Ulland; brothers Jerome and Ross; his father- and mother-in-law Arthur and Beatrice Winjum; and nephew, Greg Ulland.
