ST. PAUL — A 48-year-old St. Paul woman will serve jail time for abandoning two puppies in a recycling bin behind an animal hospital.

Anna Bertha Robole pleaded guilty in December to one count of animal cruelty. She was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail, followed by two years of probation, during which she isn’t allowed to have any pets.

The malnourished puppies were discovered in May by Scenic Hills Animal Hospital staff. One of the dogs was dead and had broken ribs.

Robole told investigators both of the dogs were alive when she left them in the recycling bin and she placed them there so they could be rescued.

Witnesses told police they had seen Robole abuse the puppies by kicking them in the head, legs and hips.
